Is Vox Populi, Vox Dei?**

Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe and take for granted, nor to find talk and discourses, but to weigh and consider.
 Francis Bacon: Essays, “Of Studies”.

I once wrote in our “Ekakmatra” group that the pleasure we get in enjoying democracy is exactly equal to the disgust we have when we allow others to exercise their democratic rights. And this forms the root of the friction and internal conflicts in mankind, and it prevails even today. Although there has been a marked difference between the so called “Ultramodern Democracy” and “Ancient Democracy”, but that has never been able to surpass the fundamental livelihood of the basic idea. In fact I am quite doubtful whether that can be surpassed or not. But the limit of tolerance has helped the society to walk on the tightrope of peace and harmony.

Another significance of democracy is attributed to the fact of “Majority Wins”. In our country on one hand there are a few people saying that mass of the country may improve if the administration is in the hand of educated delegates. We have seen the reign of Manmohan Singh, fellow return from Cambridge-Oxford. On the other hand, another group is of the opinion that, a person who has not get academic qualification but has led his whole life maintaining strict principles and there on gaining wisdom will be a better leader. We are experiencing the leadership of Mr. Modi. And then that is another section, who doubts what kind of principle to follow. Also some people must be there who are of the opinion that there must not be any opposition party to bring hurdles and obstacles in the path of the ruling party and hence the development won’t be unnecessarily hampered. Meanwhile in all these conflicting of opinions, one thing that remains blurred is what majority wants. But at the end of the day Majority Wins.  So ultimately the section which can impose on the other sections by any aspect or any mean is taken to be the standard or republic to the country. Hence the question arises, what happens to the other suppressed section?

The suppression raises the questions of the significance of the change in the society that we all crave for, raises the question of developments in livelihood. Actually there is a significance hidden in the philosophy that human development is a process of enlarging people’s choices. And this process won’t restrict itself under the naming of monarchy or republic or autocracy or socialism. This is an on-going slow and smooth process occurs spontaneously. If anything or anyone stand as obstacles to the restrain, it itself will change the “-ism”. To some, this will appear to be revolutionary, to some a result of intolerance or impatience and to some an unworthy result of useless labour.

Actually as I exist, my opinion exists, for sure, irrespective of whether it matches with majority or not, matches with the minority or not, or even matches with any other opinion or not. The concept of truth is also a very relative thing, so let’s not go into that. But the democracy that is present in avoiding one’s opinion without accepting or rejecting is may lesser than the democracy that is present in making people accept certain opinions without applying brute force or bullying people. This is the point from where the clash goes end from the corridor of understanding and attaches itself to a bigger prospect of individual ego or group’s. Few accept this as servitude and the rest adjust and connect themselves to solitude and loneliness. Hence the definition.

So at last the confession, what I tried to say, what I tried to write, I hope neither does it cross the barrier of democracy and bring about a counter attack or protest, nor does it remain latent. What I have done is not share the story but sharing the experience of what I felt or realized out of the story.

Although the pen wants to say its emotions, but let it be suppressed by the excuse of education and diplomacy.
